What is SAS hard drive?

What is SAS?

SAS stands for Serial Attached SCSI.

SAS is the high-speed serial successor to Ultra320 SCSI. While SAS preserves the traditional SCSI usage model, it widens the types of applications. It is important to note that a SATA drive can be inserted into a SAS infrastructure and backplane, but a SAS drive cannot be plugged into a SATA backplane connector. SATA drives may be plugged into SAS controllers and communicate on the same physical cable as native SAS disks, but SATA controllers cannot handle SAS disks. Therefore, no cable adaptor can help you to connect SAS drive into regular SATA or PATA motherboard.

So, all of those SAS/SATA Adapters on the market for SAS hard drives designed to work only with designated computers with onboard SAS controllers such as Dell Precision Workstation 490/690/T7400, HP Workstation xw9400, etc.

This SAS to SATA adapter doesn't work with regular not-SAS motherboards.
